Continuum is OMG TV!

To say that I love Continuum would be an understatement.  As television goes, it is not just ground breaking but Earth shattering.  The idea is brilliant, and one that has maybe surfaced in real-life America in these trying financial times.  It's another of the great "What if's", and it's a dandy.  If this show gets rejected by the mainstream television, and the awards organizations, it will be a very tragic injustice to society as a whole.

Continuum, while set in the year 2012, starts out in the year 2077.  Set in Vancouver, British Columbia and to a lesser degree the northwest corner of the United States, it plays out a group of terrorists that were able to come back in time to begin their revolution. In 2077, Canada and the U.S. have succumb to their financial misgivings, and been bailed out by private corporations.  Governments yielded control to the CEO's, tough laws and dictatorship ensued.  A group of thugs known as Liber8, would be terrorists by the laws of 2077, kill thousands of innocent people in the process of attempting to kill the ruling CEO's.  They are caught, but at their execution, they devise a plan to create a portal back in time. In the process, one of them doesn't make it, but a police office - a Protector is trapped with them.

The terrorists waste no time committing the harshest crimes and spreading havoc in mass. The Protector, Kiera Cameron has some amazing 2077 technology to equalize the fight. But, she's fighting on two fronts; the terrorists and from the current days laws that seek to identify her. She gets some help from the Vancouver Police Department, but trust is an ongoing fight.

Kiera Cameron is played by actress Rachel Nichols. She makes this show, period. I was hooked after the first five minutes of episode 1.  This gal is amazing. I could not place where I had seen her, or where did they get her. She's a phenomenal actress; her character is stretched from one extreme to the other, and torn.  She is a war machine, but she has a very soft underbelly that cries for the family in 2077. If she does not win awards for this character, we need to disown and disband those organizations.  And Neilsen (oops did I say that outloud?)

So, after kicking her image around in my head for a week, I decided to look her up in IMDB. Ah hah! She was the greenish-Orion girl in the The Star Trek movie, in the scene with Kirk, Uhura walks in on them. And while she was not unknown in U.S. Television, then wasn't well known either.  But no longer, whatever her status was before last week, once Continuum aired in the U.S. she's been thrust to the top.  And to me she will always be associated with Star Trek.

Rachel Nichols, you're awesome, love ya!

Against All Odds - Stargate Atlantis John Sheppard/Elizabeth Weir Sparky Tribute

I like to tweet old songs, songs that have stuck with me over the years. Songs that bring back childhood memories too. I was in the Army on my first overseas assignment in 1984 when I first heard this song. It's from the movie "Against All Odds", starring Jeff Bridges, Rachel Ward, and James Woods. A story about the underbelly of a professional football team, the drama of the players, the coaches, the owner and family, and their shady dealings. I must have watched that movie dozens of times, and I bought the album (yes the album). CD's were fairly new then, records were still very popular, and I had a turntable. Not too many years later I became a fan of science fiction. Of course, "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "Babylon 5" were about all there was on TV. "SeaQuest" came along shortly thereafter. "Stargate" the movie came out in 1994, and "Stargate SG-1", the TV series, launched in 1997 and lasted 10 seasons. This video is based on one of it's two spinoffs, "Stargate: Atlantis". If you are reading this blog, likely you are into science fiction and are familiar with the Atlantis series. John and Elizabeth were never a couple. Their relationship was very nearly train-wrecked many times during the first season, and at times still felt tenuous. There was always a power stuggle; but deep inside their mutual respect and admiration grew very deeply between them. The author does an excellent job of mixing the pictures with the song. I believe they did a great job of getting the emotional effects to the viewer. Please Enjoy!

Could Fringe continue even if canceled?

Science Fiction television has so much going against it, always has. The biggest thing is the Nielsen families they use to do the ratings are predominately not science fiction fans. So viewership is going to be skewed right off the top. I know if my house was being surveyed by Nielsen, a lot of science fiction shows would still be on the air. Is my household different? No. But it's a way less geekier to talk about American Idol or Two And Half Men (BTW, two show I DON'T watch).

Advertisers are less willing to sponsor science fiction shows. The whole history and stigma that only a niche crowd will watch keeps the big guns away.

I say let Fox cancel Fringe, and Warner Brothers move it the Syfy channel, or the USANetwork. Somewhere that it can get multiple airings, and targeted to the proper audience. Oh, and let's not forget how Fox moved Fringe to Friday night KNOWING that Friday night is where shows go to DIE.

Guess this is why I don't run the world.... 8:)

SciFriday: Beware Of Tribbles In Next Star Trek Movie

Oprah Winfrey will play a Klingon?

Now, this is an interesting development. Many famous and not so famous actors and actresses have had cameos and guest rolls on all Star Trek movies and television series. Few are of fame and caliber of Oprah Winfrey.

But the article is all about how the smallest rumor can get started by an online post. Then how feverishly fast it goes viral and out of control.

Meg In A Red Shirt? Seth MacFarlane Wants Star Trek

This might be a good thing. While I love Family Guy, I am a long time, die-hard trek fan.  What's more is that was thinking just a few days ago how kool it would be for J.J. Abrams to do a cartoon, and for Seth MacFarlane to do something like Star Trek.  Almost creepy that I would find this article, but hey I could have heard it on the news and thts what gave me the idea.

First Contact Battle Scene

One of the best scenes ever from Star Trek, and certainly one of my favorites. I think it's powerful and inspiring.

First Contact - Hollywood Disclosure

I'd never seen this before, and I'm not sure if its part of a series or documentary yet to be broadcast.  Check it out.

R.I.P. Kenickie

John Travolta & Marilu Henner Remember Costar Jeff Conaway

It was an age of innocense, I was 15.  I was with the first real love of my life at a crowed movie theater the summer of 1979. I had no idea what this movie named "Grease" was about. It showed that kids hadn't changed much since the 50's. It had a perfect blend of story and music, music that became popular, even to this day.

We were introduced to a myriad of gedre items that would stand then test of time into the 21st century.   Like "Sandra D", "Beauty School Dropout", and my favorite "hicky from Kenickey ... like a Hallmark Card, when you only care to send the very best".

The rest is history.  R.I.P. Kenickie!
