'Fringe' Finishes Behind 'V,' 'FlashForward'

This is very bad news. Fringe has become my favorite show. Fringe is the kind of show that could definitely last a long time. Look how long the X-Files lasted. The problem with Fringe is that since they moved production from New York to Vancouver, it has become more like the X-Files.

The first season was fresh and exciting, a continuing story. Not that they aren't doing that in season 2, but they have stand alone episodes that are set in that dark, wet, depressing world we always saw on the X-Files. They need to freshen it up, maybe show it twice, show it on FX. Most importantly, they need to keep the episodes as simple as possible within the science fiction. Most shows make this mistake. Only hard core fans will understand the techno-babble. The rest of us have to be entertained.

Fox Passes On Americanized 'Torchwood'

Last week I finished watching the entire Torchwood series. I had great anticipation that it would be continued, even if it's an American version. But having seen the way the final episode of "Children of Earth" ended, it doesn't see obvious how a new series would continue where that left off. Only Captain Jack, Gwen and her husband survived. I could see them hiring Lois, whom Gwen promised a job if they make it through alive.

So Fox has passed on Torchwood. The question is who else is BBS Worldwide working with to get it on U.S. television. I doubt seriously it is one of the big three (NBC, ABC, or CBS). The adult nature of Torchwood, language, partial nudity, and the lean on gay men would probably force it to HBO, Showtime, or Skinemax Cinemax. Let me be honest, as a Straight male, I wouldn't mind the gay parts being toned down. Torchwood is defined by that type of character, and while it makes me turn my eyes away from those scenes, a PG version of Torchwood just wouldn't be the same; it is what it is.

Long live Torchwood!

Comment on "Just How Doomed Are Flashforward And Caprica?"

Source: Just How Doomed Are Flashforward And Caprica

I think the pomp and audacity of Ron Moore is catching up to him. And David Eick should know better after the butt kicking he got with Bionic Woman. Caprica is not Battlestar Galactica, the momentum of the show is way too slow. Now the low ratings for the pilot are understandable since it had been freely available on the syfy.com website for months before debuting January 22nd on the Syfy channel. But the other 2 episodes have done little to further the story line.

I think only the true hard core Galactica fans are watching it in prime time. The rest of us are catching it at alternate times, which by the way, the Syfy channel has been broadcasting Caprica episodes like crazy. I'm already sick of it.

Caprica needs to get on with the story, there needs to be action and lots of story changes each week. That's what Galactica fans are used to. Personally I am not liking what little has been broadcast. I think people in general see Caprica much like Earth is now. The economy is bad, our kids have reached new heights of rebellion, the rich get richer and more powerful, etc. As for Sam Adama, I wish they'd kill him off. As it stands right now, if they never aired another episode, we already know how it ends.

As for Flashforward, I love the show. But I think the big three networks are hard on sci-fi shows, unless you are J.J. Abrams. Flashforward made the fatal error that many complex shows make, they get too complicated. Casual viewers cannot tune in to a given episode and understand what is happening. Not to contradict that, but the story is really not moving all that fast or at least they were not giving us allot of answers. Viewers want to be fed facts as the story goes along. they do not want to watch for 57 minutes and get a few answers and a new riddle just before they roll the credits. That's highway robbery, and as you can see viewers are turning the channel.

My guess is if J.J. Abrams and his crew were producing Caprica, Flashforward, and has produced Bionic Woman, they'd all be fighting for number 1 every week. I think there's a lesson to be learned here. Fringe and Lost are doing quite well.

Angel Puppet

Ok, I know this is old news and the episode aired 6 years ago tomorrow. But when I watched the "Smile Time" episode of Angel for the very first time last week, I knew I had to post something. This episode was very much off the beaten path for Angel. While every episode has a serious tone, the mix of humor, history, modern day realities, and twists of pop culture gave each episode a unique perspective on the the darker side of life.

To the hard core Buffy and Angel fan, "Smile Time" might have seemed like a bad joke, like maybe the writers had just gone insane or ran out of story-lines. But after all the initial jokes by TEAM Angel and the crew at Wolfram and Hart, it is discovered that a nationally broadcast television puppet show called Smile Time fell off the wagon and sold its soul to some demons. Children were falling into deep comas, but was limited to the Southern California market. But now the demonized puppets at Smile Time have discovered how to spread their destruction to the rest of the world. TEAM Angel heads to the Smile Time studios to lessen the demon population.

Probably the coolest pop culture television clip ever recorded is featured in the ending of the episode (in the clip below). It wouldn't be the same if Angel did not turn vamp when fighting, so why should it be any different just because he is a puppet? Well it wasn't, and it's priceless.

Angel Puppet Goes Vamp

While doing research for this article, I was amazed to find just how popular this one episode was. Then there's the mad sale of the actual Angel puppets that continue to sell out at many venues. Not to mention the posters, comic books, and videos just for this episode. All that and 6 years later.

The actor David Boreanaz now stars in Bones as FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth. Would it be absolutely cool to see Special Agent Booth go vamp just once, maybe at the very end of an episode? That would be a gag!
